“The Old Man and the Sea” Book Review

The story had been in his mind for years. His last successful book, For Whom the Bell Tolls, came out in Positive Messages Perseverance, resourcefulness, and the ability to make the best of existing circumstances are all core values here, as well as the loyalty of the boy Manolin to Santiago despite much adversity.

He believed the novel was his finest work. But Hemingway forces me to remember and acknowledge the individual, the struggle for the most basic existence, the battle with nature for survival itself. For two days they battle, and Santiago wins that battle, but then loses the great fish on the way home to the scavenger sharks who find him easy prey.

A life far removed from harsh confrontations with nature. He missed the boy who looked out for him. On the eighty-fifth day of his unlucky streak, Santiago takes his skiff into the Gulf Stream, sets his lines and by noon, has his bait taken by a big fish that he is sure is a marlin.

A pot of yellow rice On most of the days the old man came in empty-handed, the boy guided him home. It was the last novel Hemingway wrote during his lifetime; his subsequent novels were published posthumously.

In the first 40 days, a boy he was very fond of, and vice-versa, had been with him. Santiago knows that he is defeated and tells the sharks of how they have killed his dreams. The Swedish medal was stolen inbut was returned later upon the threat of Raul Castro.

Though wounded by the struggle and in pain, Santiago expresses a compassionate appreciation for his adversary, often referring to him as a brother. Once home, he slumps onto his bed and falls into a deep sleep. I tried to make a real old man, a real boy, a real sea and a real fish and real sharks.

Questions?

All the symbolism that people say is shit. I am no Santiago, no macho man. The old man hopes no fish will come along that will prove the boy wrong. The fable-like structure of the novel suggests that the story is symbolic, which is why many view The Old Man and the Sea as an allegory.

The story is told with incredible economy of words and description, yet nothing is sacrificed which drives home the power and inner strength of this man, who just takes it as what he does, what it is to be a serious fisherman. But if I made them good and true enough they would mean many things.

Hemingway claimed there was no symbolism in the book.“The Old Man and the Sea” is a novel written by Ernest Hemingway () and published in It was the last novel Hemingway wrote during his lifetime; his subsequent novels were published posthumously.
